Our wrists were covered in a rainbow of rubber bands shaped like animals, objects, and even letters. Collecting and trading these little accessories felt like a serious business at the time. It was the absolute best when your teacher had them in her prize box!

Clothing and accessories plastered with oversized logos became a fashion staple. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we willingly turned into walking billboards for brands. Coach and Dooney & Bourke made a killing during these times with their logo purses. 

Crush Collages

Bedrooms were adorned with intricate collages featuring our crushes from magazines. While it seemed like an artistic declaration of our feelings, it was more like a shrine of awkwardness. Many were actually filled with celebrities that you swore you would meet and marry, even if you lived in the middle of nowhere. 

Gel Pens Galore

Our love for gel pens knew no bounds. We transformed school notes into neon artworks, only to realize that legibility was sacrificed for the sake of colorful ink. Half the time, they didn’t even write on the paper, or you couldn’t read it, though! 

Pogs Mania

We amassed stacks of these colorful discs, participating in intense Pogs battles that were as confusing as they were competitive. To think we once took these cardboard circles so seriously! Plus, did anyone know how to actually play this game? 

Platform Shoes

Strutting around on ridiculously high platform shoes was the norm, even if they made us feel like we were walking on stilts. Who knew we’d later opt for more sensible footwear? The platform flip flops were all the rage with the middle school girls who could barely walk in sneakers! 

Bowl Haircuts

 Inspired by various boy bands and celebrities, the infamous bowl haircut was all the rage. Despite its lack of style, many of us proudly rocked this quirky ‘do. Everyone wanted to be Jonathan Taylor Thomas! 

Wallet Chains

 Adorning our jeans with wallet chains was seen as the epitome of coolness. Their clinking noise with every step was an unmistakable badge of trendiness. Many people swore they were gonna lose their wallet during their hangout session at the mall! 

Yin-Yang Accessories

 From necklaces to clothing patches, yin-yang symbols were everywhere. We embraced this ancient philosophy without fully grasping its meaning. The saying, “You are the yin to my yang,” even became a thing! 

Tamagotchi Obsession

 We carried around these virtual pets, feeding and caring for them as if they were real. The panic caused by a neglected Tamagotchi’s virtual demise was unmatched. Did anyone else get a babysitter for their Tamagotchi while on vacation? 

Fanny Packs

Strapping on fanny packs allowed us to carry our belongings with “hands-free” convenience. Little did we realize we were also embracing a questionable fashion statement. These are quickly coming back into style and many people are loving it again!

 Thinning out eyebrows was a trend that left many of us regretting our impulse to overpluck. Thankfully, brows have since made a fuller comeback. There are plenty of 30s moms who wish they never followed this trend! 

Baggy Clothes Overload

 We embraced oversized clothing to the point of drowning in fabric. It’s as if we were determined to be swallowed up by our own attire. The oversized look is coming back into vogue, and many teenagers are wearing oversized jeans and shirts again.
