Active With You’re Children

To start, a thoughtful comment was, “Spending time with their kids, being present and supportive as fathers. I’ve done and still do some counseling, and a common theme of deep regret in older men is they missed their children’s childhood. Mostly by being too busy working and doing home remodeling/repairs.”

Talking About Pay

One user said, “Talking about pay. We kept silent for way too long. Talk about it. Get what you’re worth.”

Work/Life Balance

A popular comment was, “I think that most younger men today have a better handle on maintaining work/life balance than us Gen-X folks did at the beginning of our careers.”

Another comment was, “Pushing the boundaries of work/life balance – I’m 70 & regret the travel, commuting hours wasted, having to buy suits, chasing dollars – just overall not spending quality & quantity time with the fam. Thankful for marriage, kids, & taking care of my health (& for investing early), but you can’t buy time – don’t waste it!!”

Inclusion

An important comment was. “One of the things I admire most about today’s young people (today’s young men all the way down to elementary school age boys) is how well they treat their classmates with physical and mental disabilities. When I was in school, having a physical or mental disability was a quick path to isolation and ostracization.”

Feelings

One user replied, “Being vocal about their feelings. Yes, there’s still work to do, but I think the stigma has been reduced in part because men are more open now to talking about mental health.”

Wife Jokes

A popular response was, “I love that younger guys don’t use their SO as the punchline to all their jokes. The old ball and chain stuff is dying, and I’m very proud of the young guys for scrapping it.”

Another response was, “Same. I’m an early 30s guy and never make those jokes. Some guys in the 45+ range still do, and I just roll my eyes at them and/or straight up ask, “Then why the fudge are you married to her then.” Usually only need to react like that once or twice before they stop.”

Less Drinking

One person shared, “Less drinking.”

A second person said, “As someone in their 30s giving this whole sobriety thing a shot – I’ve been blown away by the na options I’m starting to notice. The biggest shocker has been the people my age, friends and such, who’ve quietly asked what I did to fully pursue the NA options.”

Kindness

A comment was, “Being kinder to people different from them.”

Another was “Rejecting racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic religions (sort of a prerequisite for being kinder to people who are different).”

Physical Affection

One user replied, “I’m early 30s. A big departure from my teenage years that I see in Gen Z is that men are comfortable being platonically physical with each other. Hugs, hand-holding, etc., between straight male friends are becoming more common. Most men in my generation (and basically all men from the generations before) were not this comfortable sharing physical affection with one another — and I suspect many suffered for it.”

Sceptical of Military

A most-liked comment was, “Might be where I live in the country, but many older men I’ve spoken to over the past couple of weeks are happy to see younger men being skeptical of the military and not wanting to sign up to be thrown into pointless wars.”

Sports Science

A person shared, “I think it’s amazing how far nutrition, stretching, and sport science in general have come. Not long ago, athletes would be eating steak and potatoes with a couple of beers before a big game.”

Early Investments

One comment was, “Investing when very young.”

Another comment was, “This was big. I never anticipated having the highest salary. But I did have the financial savvy to start investing early. Roth IRA at 18 and threw as much money as I could once I turned 21 into my 401k. Time is your number 1 asset, hands down.”

Marriage Choices

One user replied, “Not getting married.”

Another user added, “I’d like to qualify this with “not getting married because it’s the thing that’s expected of you” Even more so in regards to having children.”

No Toxic Jobs

A popular reply was, “Many millennials are refusing to accept toxic jobs for poverty wages. They’re standing up for themselves and unionizing. And many have recognized that the boomer mantra of “go the distance and the company will reward you” for the bologna that it is. Going above and beyond your job description may have gotten you ahead half a century ago. But these days? It just marks you as a gullible sucker and nets you more work piled on top for zero additional consideration.”

Respecting Women

Finally, someone shared, “Respecting women as equals and treating them accordingly.”
