If you’ve ever been to the beach before, you know just how hot the sun can get. Everyone should be applying sunscreen whenever they head to the beach, whether for a few days or just a few hours. Sunburn can happen before you know it! One woman found this out the hard way when she started some family drama by refusing to put sunscreen on her stepsister.
In this beachy vacation story, a woman shares their dilemma with their stepsister. During a beach day with their dad and brother, the step-sister asked the woman to apply sunscreen on her back, which she couldn’t reach due to her size. However, the woman felt uncomfortable and declined without revealing the real reason: her back was covered in pimples. The stepsister persisted, leading to the user finally admitting their discomfort with her acne. This upset her, causing her to distance herself at the beach and eventually get a sunburn after no one put sunscreen on her back.

When the family returned to the hotel, the step-sister complained to her mom, resulting in the stepmom getting involved and being upset with the woman. She criticized her for making the stepsister feel bad about her body and ruining the trip for her. The stepmom believed the woman’s discomfort was less important than the stepsister’s need. The woman did not feel it was okay for the stepsister to feel uncomfortable with the stepfather and brother putting sunscreen on her and that her uncomfortable feelings were unacceptable.
She defended her decision not to put sunscreen on the stepsister, suggesting spray sunscreen, and later learned that the stepsister’s size wasn’t the issue but rather her flexibility. The woman also clarified that they didn’t think acne was contagious and expressed frustration at assumptions made about their mention of the stepsister’s size.
The People Respond…
Many people suggested the woman apologize to the stepsister and discuss how she could make her feel better. They go on to say that she embarrassed a young girl and it is not okay to body shame people, whether it’s overweight, pimples, or other body issues.
Others said that she has every right to refuse to put on the sunscreen. The stepsister did not feel comfortable asking the stepfather or brother, so why couldn’t the young lady feel uncomfortable putting it on the stepsister? The feelings of the young woman were pushed to the side and made her feel as though they did not matter; only the stepsister’s feelings did.
Meanwhile, some were very torn on the situation, saying they see both sides of the situation. One person agreed with the woman saying it would make her super uncomfortable to touch pimpled skin and probably make her gag, but if it was her stepsister and she knew she’d get burned, she probably would have sucked it up and tried to get a little on her.
Another person replied, saying that they absolutely would never have put the sunscreen on. If the stepsister was uncomfortable with her stepdad and brother putting it on her, she should have had her mom do it before she left for the spa. It’s her problem.
