Last month, Katy Perry made headlines for all the wrong reasons when she was accused of “mom shaming” an American idol contestant. On the March 5th edition of the show, Perry told Sara Beth that she had been “laying on the table too much” when the 25-year-old revealed to the judges that she had three kids.
Perry has a young child of her own, Daisy, and critics believed that she should have known better than to make deregulatory comments to a fellow mom. The scrutiny on the California Gurls singer has once against intensified after Sara Beth sensationally quit the show last weekend.

After performing the Police hit ‘Roxanne,’ the talented singer told judges that the performance would be her last on the show because her heart was at home. She told Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie that the opportunity was “really rad” but that she was “going to get home” to her babies as they needed her.
Judge’s Reaction
After scraping through the first round of auditions with a 2:1 vote, Sara impressed the judges more the second time around, which prompted them to almost plead with her to stay in the competition. Bryan was particularly vocal and told her that she was making a “mistake,” while Perry urged her not to give up and told her that she had opened the door to a new world.
Explaining her decision further, the young singer said:
“I don’t even know what show business is. I’ve been a mom since I was 18, and I’ve been married since I was 18. I don’t think I realized quite how hard it would be to be away from kids. They’re still really young.
There is a lot of guilt when you leave your kids to do something completely selfish. I feel like I’m not gonna win the show anyway, so I might as well go home.”
After sticking to her original decision, despite the pressure applied by the judging panel, Sara admitted backstage that she was close to changing her mind and was appreciative of the judge’s comments. She said:
“I’m really humbled and grateful, and Katy had some really nice things to say. If my kids were a little older… I understand how big of an opportunity this is, but I still kinda wanna go home.”
A Story that Comes Full Circle
The story initially blew up on TikTok, which resulted in Sara taking to the platform last month to tell users her thoughts on the initial audition comments from Perry. Now, the story is ending in the same manner as the 25-year-old mom of three has posted another video on the social media platform explaining her decision in a little more detail.
In the video, Sara says:
“I had a panic attack after my audition because I was so overwhelmed with gratitude and shock. My heart is grateful, sometimes we are presented with big opportunities and situations, and we have to make big decisions.
I’ve never had this much support with singing, and it’s mindblowing and so humbling and it has made me realize how badly I want to do music. Six months ago I didn’t know that yet.
I took a chance on something big and said yes to a huge and very unexpected opportunity that was presented to me – in the process, I found myself again, met the most talented people I’ve ever had the honor of meeting and fell in love with music again.
