What are your standout podcasts of 2022? Best single episodes? The best-serialized show? Best true crime podcasts? Best fiction podcast? Best docs? Your year’s end playlist wrap? After polling the internet, here are the top-voted recommendations.
1. If Books Could Kill
“It was late arriving in 2022, but If Books Could Kill is an amazing podcast. The most recent episode, “The Game,” had me laughing out loud. Brilliant work as always from Michael Hobbes (and his co-host),” one suggested. “Peter Shamshiri is the other host, and he’s funny as all get out,” confirmed another.
2. Maintenance Phase
“On the Michael Hobbes bandwagon, Maintenance Phase continues to be brilliant as ever. Michael and Aubrey are dynamite,” one stated.
“The Maintenance Phase podcast is awesome. It is a podcast that straight-up kicks the junk science world in the teeth. I always try to tell my friends and family about this to no avail,” another agreed.

3. HeirHeads
“I’m lamenting the loss of HeirHeads in 2022. It was a fun commentary on how outdated and out of touch the British monarchy is. Irreverent and sometimes scathing, yet also empathetic. Their observations on media bias were insightful too,” noted one.
“HeirHeads pokes so much fun at the Royal Family and the seriousness of their monkey business. From wardrobe to gossip to rumors, they cover it all,” a second user replied.
4. The Outlaw Ocean
Someone explained, “The Outlaw Ocean, a joint production between CBC and LA Times about all the crazy things that happen in international waters. Kind of reminiscent of another CBC co-production, Hunting Warhead – top-notch writing and investigative journalism, but also difficult to listen to at times due to the disturbing content.”
Another agreed, “One of the best podcast series I’ve ever listened to, it’s well researched and covers topics that are so important yet are not given as much attention as they deserve. Highly recommend it!”

5. Normal Gossip
“I recently discovered Normal Gossip, a podcast where a friend of a friend sends in real gossip for discussion. So, for example, you get to hear about the real drama of a small-town knitting group or a friend group that goes on an international vacation, told by the host with a guest host each episode,” shared one.
“At several points, the host will ask the guest what they would do in this situation, and most hosts have great commentary. It’s fantastic to listen if you love to hear gossip without being involved or enjoy reading people’s stories on Reddit (although the podcast is way better).”
6. The Art of Crime
“My favorite new podcast of 2022 has been The Art of Crime. It’s part social and artistic history, on the one hand, and part – true crime,” one suggested.
“Season one focused on six Victorian artists accused of the Jack the Ripper crimes. Again, the research and writing are top-notch. I love how the episodes weave in and out of the artists’ biographies and the story of the hunt for the Whitechapel killer.”

“The episode on painter Walter Sickert was particularly excellent. The show, as a whole, is highly original—perhaps because it’s more interested in the artistic and historical angles than it is in the true-crime one. It’s just great research-based storytelling.”
7. The Videos Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avery
“The Videos Archives Podcast with Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avery – look, I don’t watch the films even if I have the time or the access. But I love hearing passionate people discuss films they love (see also The Departed Friendly Fire and the good (but not outstanding) Unclear and Present Danger,” another shared.
“Tarantino and Avery love cinema, filmmaking, acting, casting, genre-melding, and the sensibilities of imported VHS cover art.”
8. Killed
“Killed (Audiochuck) – some journalists have a story ready to publish, and then it gets nixed… they’ll tell you about it on this show. I enjoy behind the media curtain, and this podcast provides it in a slick, easily consumable pill,” someone assured.
Another added, “Killed is great. Thanks for hipping me to it. You might like Missing Pages; it’s about literary scams.”
9. Dead Eyes
“Dead Eyes. It’s incredible, and there’s nothing else like it. It’s so many things. A meditation on failure. Ridiculously funny to the point where I had to pause because I was laughing too hard behind the wheel. Heartbreaking. It goes to bizarre places. Connor Ratliff is a treasure. He made art,” said one.
10. Can I Tell You a Secret
“Can I Tell You a Secret explores the devastation caused by one man who stalked and tormented, online and occasionally in real life, dozens of women from the same town over ten years,” one shared.
