Generational advice just isn’t very helpful. They often do not understand the struggles, issues, and changes the newer generations are going through. The Boomer generation seems not to understand that the younger generations just do not want their advice, and often their advice is irrelevant now. Recently someone asked the question, “What are some common “Boomer” Advice/Tactics that just don’t work anymore?”
Sending Out Resumes
One Redditor wrote, “Go down to the company and hand them your CV.” Loads of places don’t even accept CVs and want you to fill out a ten-page application form, undergo a psychometric test, do an arithmetic test and a situational-awareness test just even to be considered for a ten-minute phone interview.”
Another Redditor added, “Many places I’ve applied even specifically say they don’t want to see a resume. They always want you to fill out their form so they have everyone’s information in the exact same format.”
One Job Households
A popular comment was, “My parents bragged to my wife and me about how they both worked but lived off of my dad’s paycheck and banked my mom’s whole paycheck. With our expenses, we can barely save anything, let alone one of our whole paychecks.”
Another funny comment read. “Yep, but I guess we should just cut back on our iPhones, right? That will solve all our problems.”
Bachelor’s Degree= High Paying Job
One person commented, “I think the biggest one I’ve encountered is the idea that having a bachelor’s degree should somehow guarantee me a cushy, high-paying job. For a long time, my parents were positively shocked that I wasn’t basically handed a high-power job offer on a silver platter along with my degree.”
Another upset person wrote, “I graduated with a bachelor’s in CS about a year ago. I’ve sent out 100 applications in the last 6 months, and I’ve barely gotten any response. All of which are just “we have decided to move forward with other candidates…”
Pricing Issues
One Redditor replied, “Even if you live in a part of the country with a lower cost of living, house prices are rising like crazy. I bought a small house in Ohio 2 years ago for $110k in the burbs of a large city. According to Zillow, my house has increased in value by over $30k in only 2 years. I’m tempted to sell and pay off debt, but I don’t really want to go back to renting and not having equity.”
Another Redditor added, “They’re out of touch with prices in general. My grandfather thinks going out to dinner should still be about $8 per person. Even a fast food combo is coming out to $8 these days.”
Stick With A Company
A popular comment said, “Stick with a company no matter what, and you’ll have a good job for life.”
Another popular comment read, “I think the biggest boomer tactic that doesn’t work anymore is getting on with a company and staying there for a long time or until retirement. That sh** just doesn’t work anymore. if you need a raise, look elsewhere and leverage your experience into a higher salary, because most companies will give you a 3% raise yearly. then after a few years, new hires will come in at higher salaries.”
Job Advice
Another laughable piece of advice was, “If you can’t find a job in your current city, just move!” Yeah…with what money?”
One last comment was, “I always hear, “You’re young, single, and have no kids. You should work a lot of hours and get rich.”
Relationship Advice
A Redditor responded, “Let’s see. All the advice I ever got from my parents about relationships is absolutely terrible and addresses all the wrong things unless I want a relationship that is as absolutely dysfunctional and utilitarian (more like using each other) as theirs.”
Millennials Are Lazy
One user wrote, “If a boomer tells you that millennials are lazy and entitled, just remind them that factually millennials work longer hours for lower pay and are vastly more productive. It’s not just this generation. Basically, every generation increases productivity, and the previous generation almost always sees the next one as lazy.”
Another person said, “This only works if you have the numbers of housing, income, and work hours. With a comparison to their generation.”
Use The Classifieds
A Redditor replied, “My boomer parents seem to think you still find jobs by “reading the help wanted ads,” and “pounding the pavement” and other sayings, apparently to feel like they’re being helpful even though they probably feel awful knowing that today’s world is beyond them. They’re no doubt happily retired.”
Another Redditor added, “My dad told me I need to be looking for jobs in the classifieds. If I found a company that only listed job openings in a newspaper and not online, that would be a big red flag that they were at least 20 years behind in the industry. I wouldn’t be able to do my job at an outdated company.”
Medical Advice
One scary comment was, “Their medical knowledge is way out-of-date. It takes a life-long learner to keep up, and most Doctors are people, and most people aren’t life-long learners.”
“Try Harder”
A very annoyed Redditor commented. “have been retired for a decade and railing on you that you’re not “trying hard enough.”
Another Redditor wrote, “Work hard, and things will come. No. Work hard and smart and have goals and be prepared to jump ship because you can’t put all your eggs in one basket anymore, or you’re setting yourself up for failure.”
Enjoy Life
A user commented, “I always hear “you’re young, single, and have no kids. Live your youth, travel, be active, and have fun.”
Budgeting Advice
One person wrote, “But but you just need to budget better and work harder. If you were working harder, your employer would obviously pay you more to keep you. If they are not paying you enough, just leave and find someone who will. That is how the free market works!!!”
Another person added, “I make low 6 figures and can’t imagine a world in which I save up a lot or even start investing. I live with my girlfriend, and for the room, we need in an apartment, I have to pay much more than she does because she’s a hospital worker and gets paid diddly ****. We are fully comfortable but things like nice cars? Investments? Hell, even a mortgage? Unthinkable.”
Don’t Take “No” as an Answer
A popular comment was, “Older co-worker: You have to humble yourself and go door to door hat and resume in hand and ask…no DEMAND a job, speak to the manager and DO NOT TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER! Worked for me back in my day.”
Work Your Way Up
One Redditor added, ‘”Work your way up from the bottom.” That’s how you get shafted. You progress your career by jumping to a new company or actively looking for better roles.”
Boomers sure seem like they are out of touch with what works and doesn’t work anymore, and these Redditors definitely showed that. What Boomer advice/tactic have you heard?
