Lately, Boomers seem to get a bad reputation for not understanding or agreeing with many things done in society. Many of them do not believe they deserve this reputation because they have assimilated just fine, but others are still holdouts for how things were more difficult in the “old days,” and it gives the group a bad reputation. They are a great generation and are not as bad as the younger generations are, making them sound, but why do boomers refuse to acknowledge the difficulties that younger people have in society today? Let’s explore it a bit.
They’re Privileged
One user simply wrote, ‘Because then boomers would have to admit they were privileged.”
A second user replied, “I once tried to explain privilege to a boomer…. they promptly threw a temper tantrum, left, and went home to their half-million dollar home that they bought on a minimum wage income back in the 80s. They are so privileged that they are as blind as a worm to their own privilege.”
They Don’t Admit Fault
A popular comment read, “Because then that would mean that they have to acknowledge that it’s their fault younger generations are suffering in the first place from the policies they put in, and boomers do what boomers do best ignore it and pretend they didn’t do anything.”
Too Much Lead?
Another person added, “We don’t talk about this anywhere near enough. We will be dealing with the long-term ramifications of our widespread use of lead for decades, if not centuries. It’s truly astonishing what it does to the brain and cognition in general.”
They’re The “Me” Generation
A Redditor wrote, “They were known as the “Me generation” before being known as boomers.”
A second Redditor responded, ‘“It’s not a problem if it’s not /my/ problem.” The same reason why governments won’t help with inflation and housing issues, with gun violence, with reproductive rights, with right-wing fascism… they don’t care unless it affects them, personally.”
They Thing They’re “Self”-Made
One Redditor added, “Boomers all think they are self-made. If you tell them that their circumstances were better and that things have gotten way more expensive paired with low-paying jobs, they have to acknowledge that they aren’t some kind of self-made Jesus that chose to be rich. They won’t ever do that. Their ego is too inflated.”
They Think They Worked Harder
A popular comment was, “You can’t work twice as hard to make twice as much. The economy is a broken system that rewards luck more than anything else. I’m not saying it’s impossible to earn more, but that “working harder” is by no means a guarantee.”
Boomers Can’t Do Math
A Redditor wrote, “My answer is basically boomers can’t do the math.
Basic math shows people nowadays earn something like 30%-50% of the buying power boomers earned growing up. So the same jobs, on average, basically pay people half what they used to. So young people nowadays mathematically have to work twice as hard for the same pay.
They Love The Current System
One user replied, “Because they are the direct beneficiaries of the current system. They spent 50 years voting to give themselves **** and have their children pay for it. If they acknowledge that, they will have to feel guilty about their actions.”
Another user added, “They refuse to accept the fact that they’re the ones who voted all of the benefits that they took for granted away from their children and grandchildren.”
Are Boomers Narcissists?
One comment was, “Narcissistic tendencies do not allow compassion for anything or anyone that does not measure to the perfection they see themselves as achieving.”
They Don’t Care
A Redditor simply said, “Because it doesn’t affect them. They literally don’t care.”
Inconsistent Beliefs, Thoughts, Etc.
One user commented, “Every generation has some degree of cognitive dissonance towards the experience of the younger generation that will replace them. Boomers, on average, do seem less empathetic and more narcissistic than usual. There are a lot of factors, but the two that stand out are the unprecedented level of change in the quality of life between the older and younger generations, so much that they literally cannot comprehend how bad it has become.”
Another user added, “They were jerks when they were younger, too. They loved the “tough love” stuff and were pretty sadistic about it.”
Television Influence
A Redditor responded, “One big reason is the amount of talking heads on the ol’ boob tube telling them for years and years that young people are simply just entitled.”
They Don’t Understand
One person wrote, “They don’t understand the modern world, and they still think that the rules that worked when they were young still apply to the current day.”
Another person continued with, “Because that would require a Boomer admitting that they benefitted from unions and strong social safety nets and that their prosperity wasn’t a result of exclusively their own hard work. I would recommend more achievable pursuits like squeezing blood out of a stone.”
Can’t Admit Failure
A Redditor replied, ‘Because it would acknowledge their failure.”
Another Redditor commented, “They would have to accept that they left the world worse than when they inherited it.”
Lack of Empathy
One popular comment was, “The general lack of empathy extends into many things. Social security? Oh, THEY deserve it but not the freeloading youngins. Welfare? Oh, it helped THEM when they needed it, but don’t dare spend a penny on the welfare queens in other neighborhoods. Abortion? Oh, it’s ok for THEIR family because of XYZ, but it should be illegal cause obviously it’s murder. It’s a conservative principle to be ignorant and hate everything until it personably affects them.”
Entitled
A comment read, “Because boomers are the most entitled generation ever. They get their way 90% of the time, and the 10% they don’t act like everyone else is entitled and throw their toys out of the cot.”
