Retirement age for many Boomers is right around the corner, with the final year of baby boomers was 1964. This year is 2023, and many will be turning 59 years old. Next, it will be Gen X’s time to retire; somewhere in the next 25-30 years, it’ll maybe be the millennials’ turn to retire.
It’s frightening to think about retirement, especially if you didn’t start saving for it early in life or just you started saving recently. A Redditor recently asked the internet, “What will retirement look like for us millennials?” and this thread gave answers from the serious side all the way to the hilarious side! Here are some of the best!

Homeless
One Redditor said, “Living in a van down by the river….”
Another Redditor said, “We won’t be able to afford rent on our retirement, so I’ll be in a homeless shelter.”
Dorm Living
One user replied, “We’ll be living in college-like dorms because that’s about the size of an apartment our retirements will afford us,”
This user said, “Pokémon clubs will replace bridge clubs. Water aerobics will be replaced by yoga. D&D. Quilting rates will replace Dominos are down, Origami rates are up.”
Past Your Prime
A user grimly pointed out, “My guess is that by then, the retirement age will be in your late 70s or early 80s. You will probably drop dead at work before you retire.”
Another user said, “Retire? No, you’ll be working until at least 80.”
“Retired”
One Redditor wrote, “You may be “retired,” but you will still have to work to live.”
Another said, “Let’s be real. You’ll be retired. You won’t retire.”
Communal Workspace
One Redditor said, “Your retirement housing will have a call center where you have to work to help pay for your retirement.”
This commenter said, “Retirement homes will be “live in” working environments. Insurance companies will no longer see you as a viable product.”
Start ASAP
One user advised, “Millennials and the like must take their retirement into their own hands. Start with not counting on any government pension. Also, the days of working at the telephone company for 35 years and having a livable pension are over.”
Another responded, “Start planning to be 65 when you are 35 or even earlier if you can.”
This user commented, “Just like it does for those that are about to retire, like me. Financially scary. Change that now. Put more than you can afford in a retirement plan starting now and stick to it. You will be fine.”
Medical Issues
A user said, “And remember that with hard work, sacrifice, and careful planning, you can still always be completely wiped out by a single medical crisis.”
A second user added, “I’m not worried about retirement because there are so many people dying of random medical issues. We won’t make it.”
Not Around
A Redditor wrote, “Retirement won’t be a thing,”
Another user said, “Non-existent.”
Still Working
This commenter said, “Retirement? We’ll still be working.”
Another commenter said, “With how our country is going, there will be no retirement. You’ll work until you die.”
Off The Land
A funny comment was, “We’ll all be living off the land trying to survive.”
A Redditor added, “Forest foraging for food.”
Gaming
This user said, “Super Smash Bros tournament in the nursing homes, brotha man.”
Another said, “Instead of crocheting and arts and crafts, there will be gaming tournaments of “old school” games.”
Climate Change
One user exclaimed, “We’ll die in the climate wars long before we can retire!”
A second user added, “Climate change will kill us first.”
Never Growing Up
One Redditor said, “Sitting in front of my tv or computer playing games and yelling at kids to get off my lawn.”
A second Redditor added, “ I plan to live my life like I am now, gaming, working from home and smoking weed.”
The Future
A funny comment was, “I hope there is a teleport machine in each house so I don’t have to drive to see my grandchildren.”
Another funny comment said, “I hope I can just get everything delivered to my door and put away by robots.”
Just Like Rose
This Redditor hilariously said, “I picture it like the Golden Girls (because we can’t afford our own place or never got to buy a house), but we all still go to work.
