He accidentally gambled his money away, and it turns out it wasn’t his money. It was his mother’s. Here’s the story.

A Reddit user tells the story of his gambling addiction and how he accidentally gambled away his mother’s money, thinking it was his.

Battling Addiction

The original poster (OP) explained that he has a gambling problem and has been gambling daily for two years. He said he has lost more money than he “can begin to think of.” He has a girlfriend who knows about his issue and has been letting him live with her rent-free while he attempts to get his life together.

OP said that he was visiting his mom for Christmas, and she said that she was planning on giving him £100 for Christmas; she just hasn’t found the time to give it to him yet. On boxing day, he saw the money on the table and thought it was his. He took it and gambled it away.

OP said he couldn’t help it and that he wanted the rush that comes with gambling, especially because it was £100 “all at once.” He knows he shouldn’t have done it, and he ended up coming back with nothing.

When his mom asked where her money had gone, he admitted that he thought it was his and spent it.

Facing the Consequences

OP’s mom called him a disrespectful thief and asked him what he had spent it on. He admitted that he had gambled it away, and she told him to leave her house.

OP hasn’t spoken to her since. OP swears he wouldn’t have spent it if he hadn’t thought that it was his money, but he made the assumption because it was the exact amount she had said she was going to give him. He feels bad about stealing from her and admits that it isn’t the first time.

Last year, she found out that he had stolen £75 from her, and he thinks that this most recent incident only adds to her anger.

Was OP in the wrong for assuming the money was his? Is his mom right to be so angry with him and call him a thief? How would you have reacted in this situation?
