Jada Pinkett Smith has made headlines by revealing that she separated from Will Smith seven years ago and that the pair are divorced without the papers. The actress and talk show host made the revelations in a series of interviews as she gears up for the release of her new book, “Worthy” on October 17th.
Pinkett Smith’s relationship with her husband, Will, has always been of interest to the media but the pair’s marriage was the focus of increased attention last year at the 2022 Oscars Ceremony. When host, Chris Rock, made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, Will Smith got up from his seat and slapped Rock on stage.

While Smith’s actions overshadowed the crowning night of his career (winning an Oscar for his performance in King Richard), many people empathized with him due to the fact his actions were borne from his desire to protect his wife.
However, Pinkett Smith has now revealed that she had already been separated from Smith for six years at the point of the slap. She told People Magazine:
“We had been living separate lives and were there as a family, not as husband and wife. But when I hear Will yell “wife” in the chaos of the moment, an internal shift of ‘Oh shoot, I am his wife!’ happens instantly.
Reminiscing on their relationship
Although they have been separated for seven years now, Pinket Smith has said there are no plans for a formal divorce. The relationship hasn’t been all bad, with Pinkett Smith reminiscing with People Magazine about how they got together more than 25 years ago. She said:
“Will called me up one day and said, ’Hit me when you get to L.A.’ and then … click. And I was like, ‘Whoa. Okay.’ And so when I got to L.A., I called him. I haven’t been able to get rid of him since.
“When I called, he asked me, ‘Who are you going out with?’ After I said I was single, he said, ‘Well, you’re going out with me now’. Can you believe I fell for that?
“Once I met Will, I completely abandoned my mental health. I was so intoxicated by him and our dynamic. I really felt like I was cured. He became my drug.”
Pinkett Smith isn’t prepared to lose hope on her marriage just yet and has confessed that she still loves her husband and that they aren’t on bad terms. Elaborating on the situation, she said:
“We’re still figuring it out; we’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We’ve just got a deep love for each other, and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
If nothing else, they have their children
In Pinkett Smith’s new book, she speaks very openly about her mental health struggles and how she believes her kids saved her life. She told People Magazine:
“My children, they’re little gurus. They’ve taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance. They love every part of me.
“The level of love, unconditional love that they have for me and their dad. And it’s one thing to want to be the person that gives that unconditional love. And then there’s, to be the recipient of that.”
