Despite the pushback she has had to endure from her opponent Kari Lake, Katie Hobbs will take the oath of office on Monday to become Arizona’s next governor. She will also be the first Democratic governor of Arizona since 2009.
Peaceful Transition of Power
Hobbs will participate in a peaceful transfer of power at the state Capitol as she takes the reins from former governor Doug Ducey. Arizona currently has a strong economy and is in a stable financial position. It is also forecasted that the state will have a budget surplus in the next fiscal year.

Girl Power
Hobbs will be the fifth woman ever elected as governor of Arizona. The last Democratic governor was Janet Napolitano. Napolitano resigned from the governor’s position in 2009 to serve under President Obama as his U.S. Homeland Security secretary.
Hobbs was the secretary of state prior to running for governor. Before that, she was a state legislator who rose to the position of top Democrat in the Senate. When she takes office, she will be working with both a House and Senate that are controlled by Republicans, making it more difficult for her to introduce left-leaning legislation.

Hobbs will not be able to comfortably settle into her new position as long as opponent Kari Lake continues to pursue the overturning of the election. Lake has already filed a lawsuit, in which all 10 of her complaints were rejected by the judge.
That hasn’t stopped Lake from calling for a full vote recount, though. Lake believes that due to tabulation machine malfunctions and printer issues, especially in Maricopa County, the election was rigged, and a recount needs to be conducted.
Lake still has not conceded the race to Hobbs.
