Katy Perry is facing criticism online for her behavior towards a contestant on American Idol in a show that aired last month. During the show, the California Girls singer was part of the judging panel when 25-year-old Sarah Beth Liebe came onto the stage to perform.

As standard, Liebe told the judges a little bit about herself and revealed that she had three children already despite only being 25. Upon hearing this, Perry got up from her chair and ran to the side of the judge’s table, and pretended to faint dramatically.

Responding to the 38-year-olds actions, Liebe joked that “if Katy lay on the table, I think I’m going to pass out.” This prompted Perry to respond with “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much” which caused her fellow judges, Lionel Ritchie and Luke Bryan, to burst out in laughter.

Viewers of the show at the time took to social media to say that Perry’s actions had made them feel “uncomfortable” and now Liebe has taken to TikTok to admit that she too felt uneasy about the experience.

A Hurtful ‘Joke’

In the video, which has now been liked over 25,000 times, the singer said that Perry’s actions were “hurtful”. She added:

“At the start of my audition, before I sang, I mentioned that I had three children and was a young mother and Katy Perry made a joke that wasn’t super kind. I don’t have too much to say on my feelings about it because it’s probably self-explanatory. It was embarrassing to have that on TV and it was hurtful.

Despite being made to feel uncomfortable by Katy Perry, the 25-year-old managed to keep it together on the day and perform well for the judging panel. She sang two songs during her audition, starting off with Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” before singing Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets.”

She impressed the viewers at home but the judges were split on whether to send her through. Katy Perry and Luke Bryan voted to put her through but Lionel Ritchie was less impressed. However, with a majority vote, she made it through to the next stage of the competition.

The importance of uplifting women

In the same TikTok video, Liebe spoke about the importance of women uplifting women which is perhaps why she felt so disappointed by Perry’s actions. She said:

“I want to take this opportunity to say that I think that women supporting and uplifting other women is cool and I think that mom shaming is super lame.

I think that it’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman. I wanted to take this opportunity to say I see all of the young moms and just moms in general who have commented on all of the videos and posts. I see you and I hear you and I am grateful for you.

Keep loving your babies. Nobody deserves to feel crappy about that. I think if you’re a good mama and you love your babies that’s all that really matters and other comments don’t feel necessary.”
