One suggestion was, “Use the free library. You can read, play board games, join debate/discussion groups, etc., at different free libraries.”

Another suggestion was, “Join a library and start reading. A good detective novel gets my blood flowing. If you’re not into fiction, check out some how-to books. Learning how to cook or fix a car could be an enhancement. Finding a hobby to learn could be fun.”

Relaxing Gardening

A comment was, “Garden. If you have your own HOA-free yard or can get into a community garden the costs of gardening are minimal. There are ways to get free seeds. Do your research. Gardening in old rust belt towns or something similar might require certain precautions.”

Gone Fishing

One person suggested, “Fishing. Fishing licenses are cheap, and an old yard sale pole will work. You can even cut back on your food expenses if you do it right.”

A user said, “My hobby is fishkeeping. It’s low cost to get a small fish. I happily spend a lot of time watching my fish and researching what I want next. Maybe a snail, a shrimp, or a plant. I watch YouTube videos about aquarium aquascaping, shrimp tanks, community tanks, etc.”

Outdoor Exercise

A comment was, “If you live somewhere that’s not blistering hot, outdoor exercise will do it. For about $100 (shoes, shorts, and shirts), you can exercise outdoors. Running, just walking, hit training, shadow boxing, hiking, break dancing, whatever.”

Volunteering

One person said, “Save some money and fill some karma by volunteering at a food bank and you can take home free food with you .. then spend the 2 hours at the plasma bank donating plasma which they give you some money for … do each only once a month and you will see a swing of a few hundred bucks.”

A second person added, “Volunteering is a great way to do stuff you love for free to low cost, and It connects you with people with similar interests as well, so you have more people to hang out with as well too!”

Themed Days

One cool suggestion was, “I like to do themed evenings. I’ll put on a movie or a playlist from a certain time period or place and plan a meal and even an outfit to go with it. It helps regular activities feel more special for me.”

Activity Rotation

A simple suggestion was, “I also think that rotating activities is really important. Play video games on Thursdays, watch something on Fridays, clean on Saturdays, take a walk on Sundays, go grocery shopping or to the library on Mondays, etc.”

Part-Time Job

A person replied, “Buy yourself a video game you love and then challenge yourself to 100% it. I have hundreds of hours in games like Factorio or Minecraft. They were definitely frugal choices because it comes out to pennies per hour or even less.“

Cooking

One popular comment was, “If you miss the food that you used to order, maybe you could learn to make it yourself. There are tons of YouTube cooking channels and cookbooks at the library. The same is true of just about any hobby.”

Another comment was, “Do you like to cook? Trying new, more challenging recipes can be a fun way to explore new foods and learn new skills. You might spend more on groceries and maybe cookware, but it’s much cheaper eating out all the time.”

Learn to Draw

A user said, “If you can afford the $10 a month, join planet fitness and kick your own butt as much as you can stand it. You’ll sleep more, too.”

A second user added, “I work out every night. That’s what keeps me occupied and not feeling like I’m missing out.”

There are a million free lessons online.“
