Parenting Partners? Dad Made A Huge Decision Without Mom, and Now She Is Upset.

Parenting is never straightforward, particularly when one of you wants to do something for your child that the other isn’t so keen on. A reader has recently bought his son (14M) a new pet without asking his wife if was okay first, and now she is freaking out. Let’s find out why he did it and where they’re going to go from here…

Fishy Behavior

The original poster (OP) explains that his son has recently moved in to live with him and his wife after experiencing some trauma when living with his mother. As a result of this trauma, OP’s son has been having some therapy, and one of the outcomes of the therapy is the therapist suggesting that a pet of some kind would be good for him. 

OP has discussed the idea with his wife, and they couldn’t come to an agreement on what pet would be best. She said no, the most typical pets, including cats and dogs, and also vetoed reptiles and rodents. 

The other day, OP was out with his son doing some shopping in Walmart when they came across a fish tank in the pet aisle. He asked his son if he wanted a tank and some fish, and he seemed happy with it, so OP went ahead and bought it. 

Afterward, the pair went to the local pet store to buy some fish and some food and then took them home. After they set up the tank and dropped the fish in, OP sent a picture of it to his wife, letting her know what they had bought as she was out when they got back. 

As it happened, the message didn’t go through, so his wife didn’t know anything about the fish tank until she came across it a few days later. She’s not happy with him for buying something like that without running it by her, but as far as OP is concerned, it’s only fish, and he should be able to buy something for his son without having to ask her.

The tank isn’t doing any harm to her, and he doesn’t understand why she is so mad about it. Taking to Reddit, he wanted to know if he was out of line or if his wife simply needs to chill out. 

A Nice Thing To Do 

Generally speaking, the majority of people who commented on the thread had OP’s back and felt that his wife was being unreasonable. One user said: “I’m really trying very hard to find any reason why your wife might be upset by a fish” while another said:

“Your son should come first. I’m also really concerned about how unwilling your wife was to accommodate any emotional support animal for your son who has trauma that you’re actively trying to help him heal from.”

There were some people, however, who felt that he should have ran the decision by wife first. One person said:

“Even though I think your wife is overreacting, you shouldn’t have gotten a pet without speaking to her.”
