We are constantly bombarded with advertisements and influencers. How many times have you bought something and then regretted forking over the money for it? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Does a hoverboard for my tween to play with for two weeks count? Ha! After polling the internet, these were the top-voted products deemed a total waste.

1. Over-the-Counter Acne Skincare Products

“I wish I had looked into prescription skincare treatments earlier instead of wasting money on unnecessary skincare that made my acne worse,” replied one. On the other hand, another insisted, “I swear the Dove bar soap gave me the clearest skin of all the different products I’ve tried!

2. Work Wardrobe 

Someone shared, “I got a new job last year, and the dress code was business casual – coming from a job with scrubs. So, I had to buy a whole new wardrobe. I went to a store going out of business (so no returns) and spent a few hundred bucks to start my closet.”

“A few days later, the company informed us we had to buy work-embroidered shirts and only wear those with slacks or khakis. So, I spent another hundred bucks buying the shirts and a few pairs of pants. A couple of months later, we had a new manager who decided we could go back to business casual, but they must be collared shirts.”

“So then I had to go and buy a few of those. Finally, they decided we could wear any of the above. It was an expensive and slightly stressful Spring for me.”

“I went from one office where we could wear whatever to strictly business wear-only attire. So I bought a new wardrobe and sadly got rid of my more casual pieces because I only wore them on the weekends. Then Covid hit, and we’ve been working from home for two years.”

3. The Dyson Airwrap

One woman confessed, “The Dyson Airwrap. I like doing my hair, but this is above and beyond just doing your hair. It takes forever (even after practicing for a year), it makes me hot and sweaty, the curls fall out, and I’ve tried every method to make them stay.”

“The other attachments could be better. I like the hair dryer, though. I’m considering selling it on Facebook because it irks me regularly that I spent $600+ on that thing.”

4. Expensive Mascara

“I bought an expensive mascara, and it wasn’t terrific. It always made me look like a raccoon afterward, and it would flake off. I thought I was applying it wrong, but I read others had the same issues. So buying a simple drugstore one is so much better and cheaper,” suggested one.

5. Specialty Coffee Drinks

Another added, “I enjoy buying specialty coffee drinks for the occasional sugary caffeine treat. However, buy whole beans, grind them, and brew them fresh at home if you want good-tasting coffee. Any coffee tastes better freshly ground and brewed.”

6. Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening Kits

“When I tried my teeth-whitening kit, I took pictures on the first and last day, and it showed no difference, so I got my money back. After that, however, I had to send them an angry email because they didn’t want to refund the shipping cost,” confessed one.

7. Robotic Vacuums 

“Save your money. It’s a good idea in theory (a self-operating vacuum). However, mine always gets stuck somewhere, and I must constantly free it from under the couch.”

“Also, the vacuums don’t learn the house’s layout, as advertised. So they will bump into furniture and baseboards, constantly leaving scuff marks,” another admitted.

“It can’t go over most area rugs without sucking up the corners or edges and getting stuck. They need to be more efficient and cover every spot. Plus, the bin is too small, so you must constantly stop and empty it before it can finish.”

“Finally, it needs to be more powerful to handle anything more than light surface dirt, especially if you have dog or cat hair in the house.”

8. Hot Cocoa Bombs

One mom warned, “On Christmas, we received a bunch of hot cocoa bombs. My step-children tried them once, and the chocolate never fully melted. Plus, it tasted bizarre and plasticky. I ended up throwing them all away because they weren’t ever going to use them.”

9. Shake Weight

“Several years ago, I gave my wife a shake weight as a gag because she thought the commercial was funny. So sometimes, I pull it out of the junk closet and wrap it up for her on her birthday or Christmas,” one jokester shared.
