The highly anticipated prequel to the popular Netflix series Bridgerton landed on May 4th 2023. Queen Charlotte – A Bridgerton Story will focus on a young Queen Charlotte and her rise to power. It stars Golda Rosheuvel in the lead role and will consist of six episodes.
In today’s day and age, where every successful movie and television series seems to get spin-offs and prequels, this story always seemed inevitable after the success of Bridgerton, which itself is due a season three at some point later this year.

For fans of Bridgerton, the show will explore how the Bridgerton family came to be and jumps between two time frames throughout the six-episode limited series to tell the story.
A Story of Love and Power
In the present day, Queen Charlotte is the matchmaking monarch who is furious at her children for not producing heirs while in the flashback sequences, the early days of the queen’s marriage with King George are explored.
The younger version of Charlotte, played by India Amarteifio, is seen to be relieved by her husband’s good looks (with the marriage being set up) but is then left bewildered by his distant and erratic attitude towards her. As a 17-year-old who has been effectively forced into royalty, this a tricky issue to navigate.
More Trouble
Another obstacle that the young Queen faces in the series is her husband’s mother, who is played by Michelle Fairley. She is reluctant to relinquish any of her power to her new daughter-in-law meaning Charlotte has to battle to assert her own authority on the family and the society around her.
The series also takes viewers on a journey into how the world of Bridgerton came to exist, as the young royals navigate a problematic and bigoted society. Additionally, viewers will get to see how mental health issues would have been tackled in an age that cared very little about such matters.
A Chance to Reinvigorate the Franchise
Whether intended or not, the showrunners will now have to accept that Bridgerton is indeed a franchise in its own right with the release of this prequel. With it comes an opportunity to breathe new life into the series after a mixed response to Bridgerton season two in late 2020.
While Queen Charlotte – A Bridgerton story doesn’t do anything to try and “reinvent” the show, it does at least give fans a new perspective on the overarching story and allows them to see certain characters in a different light.
“I’m Happy With It”
Ahead of its release on Netflix across the world, India Amarteifio, who is entering the world of Bridgerton for the first time, told the media:
“I know how loved and cherished the show is, and I just want to do it as much justice as possible. There are fans who are die-hard for the show, and they care so much that it’s the most amazing thing to witness.
I’m going in with no expectations, so whatever comes with it is a bonus. I’ve done my work, I can sleep easy, and I’m happy with it, so that’s all I can do with it at this point.”
