Are you in the spirit of bah humbug, or do you know someone who dislikes Christmas? You’ve got company. After asking the internet, “Why would anyone hate Christmas?” These are the top-voted responses.

10. It’s a Marketing Scam

“I don’t like it because I don’t believe in being forced to give people gifts just because it’s a tradition. That isn’t a gift, then. It’s a big marketing scam in my eyes,” said one.

“Plus, the non-stop cheesy ads and music that plays starting in October.
It’s also historically inaccurate for its origins, not that most people care, but I find it funny. Also, I don’t have a close family relationship, so I don’t have that going for me either. So Bah Humbug!”

9. Growing Up Poor

Another confessed, “Growing up poor and having classmates brag about everything they got. As a child, it’s all about how many presents you get, and it felt like Santa didn’t love me as much as my classmates.”

8. Not a Christian

“It might be a surprise to you, but not everyone is a Christian, so having a holiday you don’t celebrate shoved down your throat through every form of media for two months EVERY SINGLE YEAR might not be something they enjoy,” a third person expressed.

7. Childhood Jewish Experience

“As a Jew, I can tell you that I don’t hate Christmas, but as a child, I felt left out. Everything was “Christmas, Christmas, Christmas,” and one or two small Hanukkah items at a party,” replied another.

6. Being Alone

“It’s no fun when you’re alone, or when you’ve lost a lot, when you can’t be with those you love, when you’ve had bad things happen to you at that time, etc. Even the Grinch and Ebenezer have the backstory of cruelty, causing their hatred of the holiday,” a second person added.

5. Divorced and Remarried Families

Another shared, “Because my parents divorced and remarried, there were many Christmas events I was expected at every year: mom’s, dad’s, mom’s family, step-dad family, dad’s family, step-moms family. Oh my god.”

“I’m introverted and a bit shy, so this was always super overwhelming, so I associate the holidays with stress, not joy. I can hardly stand turkey anymore.”

4. Crass Commercialism

“Crass commercialism is one issue and rampant idiotic consumer behavior. People buy useless stuff you don’t need or want, and you feel pressured to do the same to them,” replied one.

“I try to focus on buying high-quality chocolate and toys for kids and keep it simple. But ultimately, I think everyone would be happier to buy the stuff they want, and if you want to have some fun, do a secret Santa-type thing.”

3. Terrible Families

“Another explained, You should try spending Christmas with my family, and then you would understand. There’s nothing quite like sitting at the table and listening to four siblings fight over my grandmother’s inheritance while she is still alive.”

2. Working Retail

“You clearly have not worked retail at Christmas. I hated Christmas for years because of it. It made me so angry. However, the minute I changed industries, the cheer came back,” one stated.

“Seriously, I am always super stoked about the day AFTER Christmas returns and clearance sales, knowing it’s over for a whole year. But, for those in retail, the “holidays” means a ton of extra work and no time to see your family,” another agreed.

1. Trauma

Someone admitted, “Bad memories such as a traumatic event happening on Christmas is a good reason to hate the holiday,” one suggested.

“Agreed,” said another. “It took my Poppa a long time to enjoy Christmas. I think it wasn’t until he had a family. Sadly, when he was ten, his mom, aunt, and cousin died in a house fire on Christmas Eve.”
