Can’t Follow The Conversation
One Redditor commented, “if they can’t follow a thread in an argument. They keep choosing new stuff to argue against rather than the actual point. ‘but what about…’”
Another responded with, “On top of that, circular reasoning. They keep coming back to the same point, phrased slightly differently after you’ve already addressed it.”

Tells You They’re Smart
A Redditor said, “They tell you how smart they are.”
A second user responded, “They’re always talking, literally always talking, never listens to another person’s opinions or advice….”
Finally. Someone said, “I’m always right.”
Won’t Remain Calm
One Redditor suggested, “They can’t calmly debate. Instead, they yell and shout like a child and immediately throw unprovoked insults.”
Someone added, “Or they take any criticism of an idea they believe as a personal attack on them. My MIL is like this; she’ll say something inflammatory, but when you push back even slightly, then, suddenly it’s ‘well, I guess I’m just a big idiot who doesn’t understand anything then, you kids are all so rude these days.”

Constantly Interrupts
A third Redditor commented, Constant interrupting. Plus, unable to pick up the direction of the conversation.”
Another user added, “Unfortunately, this is my friend. Often times when I am telling a story or explaining something, she will get confused about the details, and I’ll have to reexplain or clarify. I know it’s not me explaining things poorly because I don’t seem to have that issue with anyone else. She just doesn’t seem to be able to keep up with the narrative, and it can, at times, get frustrating. I don’t think she’s dumb by any means, but she is the type of person to get stuck on a detail and not be able to move past it.”
Insults You
A user responded, “When they resort to personal insults instead of basing their argument on facts.”
To which another added, “When I disagree with them, they immediately start with the name-calling.”
A third Redditor said, “When arguing, they insult you instead of providing reasons.”
Improper Grammar
Another Redditor commented, “If they use your when they mean you’re.”
To which another user suggested, “Or use the wrong there/their/they’re.”
These are just a few things that Redditors thought were telltale signs that they were talking to an idiot. What about you? What are some signs you know?
