Ever since Barbie was released in theaters earlier this year, the whole of the world has seemingly caught Barbie fever and there are no signs of it dying down any time soon. The obsession has now even reached Fleetwood Mac star, Stevie Nicks, who has received her very own personal doll.
Nicks has been given the honor of being part of Mattel’s Signature Music series and she gave fans at a concert in New York on Sunday the first glimpse of her mini-me. The collector’s item is dressed like a 70s version of Nicks, with a tambourine in hand and a flowing black dress on her back.

Nicks was performing all of her biggest hits in front of a packed crowd at Maddison Square Gardens on Sunday evening when she dropped the bombshell that she was part of Mattel’s collection. She said that they had first asked her about the idea last year when the Barbie movie was still being filmed. She told the crowd:
“I have something very exciting to share with you a few hours before the rest of the world. I was very overwhelmed. Will she be like me? Will she have my spirit? Will she have my heart? When I look at her, I see my 27-year-old self. I am her and she is me.”
The inspiration behind the doll
The inspiration for the doll’s look comes from one of the most iconic images of Nicks from her early days in Fleetwood Mac. The black dress is instantly recognizable, as is the gold necklace around the doll’s neck, as both were prominent on the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 hit album, Rumours – widely regarded as one of the all-time great albums.
Nicks has since revealed that she still has the original dress from the album cover and sent it to Mattel in the hope that they would use it as inspiration for the look of her doll. The look is one of the most iconic in pop culture and Mattel have done a superb job of recreating it.
The Rumours cover wasn’t the only inspiration for the doll’s look. In Mattel’s description of the product, they use the lyrics from hit single, “Rhiannon” from 1975. It reads: “Stevie looks ready to take to the sky like a bird in flight with her flowing chiffon statement sleeves”.
Taking creative control
While some artists may have left the creative control to the doll makers at Mattel, Nicks has revealed that she was insistent on playing a key role throughout the process. Speaking to USA Today, she said:
“When Mattel first sent her to me, I told them her eyebrows are a little too arched and my eye makeup, if you go back to the Seventies, it was very Twiggy with lots of eyelashes and that doe-eyed look,”
“So I said you need to raise that dark eyeshadow above the fold in her eye and that will fix it. And I said we need to see a little bit of teeth. When I got her on June 22, I opened her up and I went, ‘She’s just perfect.’ This little Barbie is so precious and they helped her have my soul. If nobody else in the world got her but me, I’d almost be OK with that.”
