Ahhhh, the ’90s, the last decade before technology really invaded our lives! If you grew up in the 90s, you probably have fond memories of nights at BlockBuster video, using a pay phone, wearing your pager on your belt for everyone to see, or the dreaded “someone picked up the phone and kicked you off the internet!
Y2K Fear
Do you remember the excitement, fear, and anxiety surrounding New Year’s Eve 1999? The great computer crash *might* happen, but regardless you still turned the power off to your Hewlett Packard Pavilion, the massive bulky machine that sat next to that massive bulky screen. The 90s were a really interesting decade for many of us. Recently someone asked the question, “What was the absolute worst thing about the 90s?”
90s Technology Wasn’t Quite There Yet
One Redditor said, “If you so much as breathed on your CD player, it would skip.”
A Redditor also said, “Pulling over to the side of the road to look at a map when you got lost.”
This Redditor said, “Getting film developed, especially with a disposable camera. The waiting game before you got the film back was excruciating.”
A user also added, “Pay for the camera, pay for batteries, pay for film, pay to get film developed, and half of them were ****. then you would have to get film and batteries again….”
90s Fashion
A Redditor said, “Spiky hair with the blonde/orange tips. Probably with some sort of Hawaiian style shirt but with Oriental type designs on it.”
Another Redditor said, “Blisters from jelly sandals.”
One user simply put, “JNCO jeans.”
90s Starter “Social Media”
A Redditor shared, “Paging someone with 911 behind it and them not calling you back in a timely fashion.”
To which another Redditor responded, “My sister and I did that to my mother when our goldfish died. I thought it was an emergency. Mom did not.”
Another Redditor said, “Trying to come up with a good away message on AIM.”
A Redditor said this, “Calling a friend and even before you could speak to him/her, you had to talk to their parents :/.”
A user had this to add, “Calling a girl and her dad answering the phone.”
90s Internet Issues
A user left this comment, “Get off the internet; I need to use the phone.”
Another Redditor said, “Dial-Up. The grinding modem sound, getting booted off, adhering to phone schedules. We were pioneers.”
90s Movies and Television
One Redditor said, “Blockbuster late fees.”
Another Redditor responded, “1. That dancing baby in Ally McBeal. 2. Ally McBeal.”
A third Redditor added, “Watching a movie requiring 2 VHS cassettes… f*** you, Titanic.”
90s Music
A Redditor had this to say, “In 1998, when Geri left the Spice Girls. It was never the same :(“
Another user said, “The Macarena. It was everywhere, and we all hated it– yet we all did it. I bet I still know it… … … Yep. Confirmed. I still know it.”
90s Toys
A most liked comment was, “When your Tamagotchi/giga pet died.”
A second popular comment read, “Having to use a wormlight on your Gameboy Color because backlit screens weren’t a thing yet.”
A final comment was, “If you had a giant neon plastic tube full of pogs, it was a sign that you were a pog-flipping gladiator, and few dared challenge you to a game… I wish my kids were into pogs. :(“
90s Catchphrases
A second Redditor said, “As a white guy, any time I ran somewhere, everyone would yell “Run Forrest, run!” at me.”
Another Redditor added, “I had to use a cane during the height of House’s popularity. You have my sympathy.”
90s News Stories
One user commented, “I would say the rise of 24-hour news and highly sensationalized stories. Clinton / Lewinsky scandal, JonBenet Ramsey murder, Columbine, etc. I think it was around this decade that the news tipped most strongly towards hyped-up entertainment and intense focus on scandals and sensational stories instead of ‘news,’ though possibly not the beginning of the change.”
Another user replied, “Very good point, but don’t forget the OJ trial!”
90s tattoos
A popular comment simply read, “Tribal tattoos.”
Another user added, “I really wanted a tribal armband…or the equally unique thorny vines. I was too broke to actually get one, thank god. Definitely, a time when my poverty worked in my favor.”
90s Opportunities
One sarcastic Redditor wrote, “Jobs. There were just too many to choose from.”
A second Redditor replied, “I tell this to college students I meet now. Being flown all over the country my senior year for 2nd interviews and turning down 20+ companies because I really just wanted interview practice.”
90s Cars
A funny comment read, “The cars.. f****** Ford Taurus haunt the world to this day.”
Another funny comment was, “Yeah, those things were ****. We were smart and bought a Mercury Sable.”
