Many people that are part of Gen X feel that due to their policies and procedures for finances, housing, and the economy they (Baby Boomers) enacted have led to the current crisis the economy and society are currently facing. A Redditor ask the question, “What did the Boomers do?” to help discover how people were feeling about the current state of affairs. Here are some of the best responses from the thread!
Ended Programs
A user said, “They grew up in a highly progressive taxation and social services system, strong unions, a strong middle class, and cheap education and housing. As they aged, they voted to take all those things away from the younger generations to continue enriching their own generation.”
This user replied, saying, “The Boomers knock things down because it benefits THEM, and they don’t care how it affects the rest of society.
Placed Blame
One Redditor said, “They largely blamed younger generations for not being able to prosper the way they did, calling them lazy and entitled.”
A Boomer replied and said, “I am a (late-stage) boomer and endorse these responses 100%. We became the same self-centered a****les our parents were.”
Education
One commenter from Australia said, “About 10 years ago, our prime minister voted to introduce interest on all student loans and made higher education much more expensive. When this guy went through university, it was free for all citizens.”
Climate Change
One user shared, “Recently, I talked with my Boomer mother about how much of a problem climate change really is. Long story short, she said she doesn’t care because she’ll be dead before it’s a real problem.”
Housing
One Redditor said, “They influenced the housing market by buying homes at affordable prices, creating a demand for larger and more luxurious properties, and holding onto their homes for longer than previous generations, creating a housing bottleneck and driving up prices for younger buyers.”
Another Redditor replied, “My parents bought their house for $30K, I bought mine for about $225k. My kids? Good luck getting an entry-level for less than a million.”
Social Security
A user had this to say, “They’re soon to ensure that they’re the last generation that will be able to benefit from social security fully. Essentially, they are “pulling up the ladder” on their way out for future generations.”
Employment
This Redditor said, “I was hired to replace boomers. They’re giving me and my coworker wages a little above minimum wage. My upper management found out we weren’t being paid a base wage and told my lower management we needed more responsibilities to make up for the fact we were getting a smidge above it.”
A second Redditor said, “I’ve been in interviews with Boomers who started out in the position I’m applying for. They will openly admit that when they got the job I am applying for, they got it with a high school degree, no experience, and the pay they received was enough to buy a house. Now the position requires a college degree, and 5+ years of experience, only to be paid enough to barely afford rent.”
Lack Of Understanding
The Boomers will admit how crazy the world is today compared to when they were our age, but they STILL act like they aren’t the problem.
Me, Me, Me
They continually stick with the “I got here on my own merit, no one helped me” idea that their very infrastructure helped them.
Dog Eat Dog
“They effectively cannibalized our generation, and they talk crap about us because they’re getting hungry again and feel we’re lazy.”
Student Loan Debt
This Redditor said, “I’m a last-year millennial (96), and my entire life, I was told, “go to college” “you have to go to the best school you can,” etc. So I did. Now I’m being scolded and told it was all my fault that I have all these student loans and it’s my fault that I chose to go to college.”
One Redditor said, “I heard, from the first day of kindergarten, get a degree, any degree, and you’ll be set for life. So, went to college, took out a luxury car’s worth of loans, and graduated into a recession caused by boomers using their houses as ATMs because “free money”
To which another Redditor added, “This is my story as well. I’ll never forget my dad, who didn’t go to college, saying “just graduate and come out making 20/hr and you’ll be fine.” I make 25/hr now and am certainly not fine.”
Refusal Of Fault
One user said, “The main problem is a lot of them aren’t acknowledging the frustrations and hardship of being a millennial or GenZ.”
Another commenter said, “They lived in an era of pure growth with progressive taxation. Everything was easier because they weren’t really competing. Businesses were booming, and there weren’t enough people to do everything. They also had low property prices.”
Out Of Touch With Reality
This Redditor said, “They think we can just work hard to solve these issues, but they’re just blind to it all!”
Selfishness
A user commented, “They earned record levels of income, generated great wealth, and spurred economic growth, but they also spent at record levels, failed to save, and accumulated unprecedented levels of debt.”
To which another commented replied, “They took out student loans for themselves or their children but struggled to repay them due to rising education costs, stagnant wages, job losses, health issues, or retirement. They now carry over 20% of student loan debt in the US.”
Refused To Move On
Finally, a Redditor said, “They remained in the workforce for longer than expected due to financial insecurity or personal preference, reducing opportunities for younger workers and affecting labor force participation rates.”
It seems like many Redditors believe the Boomers are responsible for a lot of issues people are dealing with in today’s day and age.
