Being married is easy. Being happily married takes a lot of work. Not many people think about the difference between the two until they’re really into it with another person and are really sharing the daily grind of life, work, and kids in many cases. A Redditor posted a thread asking other married couples, “Married folk, what’s the most underrated part of marriage?” and the responses were fantastic!
“Little Things”
One Redditor said, “Being comfortable enough to be so, so weird/goofy together. A ton of our interactions with each other at home would be enormously embarrassing to have anyone else witness, but we have a great time!”
A third Redditor said, “At 44 years in, the best part is comfort, feeling SO comfortable with her.”
Laughs
A Redditor simply said, “The inside jokes.”
Another Redditor added, “Laying in bed before going to sleep and just laughing with each other about jokes and stuff.”
Dislikes
A user said, “Recognizing each other’s “looks” when out in public is the best. The: WTF?!, let’s go, I’d like another drink, want some?, f*ck that!, etc.”
Another user added, “Talking **** about other people together.”
One Redditor said, “Shared hatred. Hating the same people, hating the same places, hating the same foods, hating the same activities.”
Known Habits
A user stated, “Most underrated? Being able to know someone so well and be known so well that when you suggest things to each other, you’re almost guaranteed to like them.”
A user had this to say, “Underrated: Having someone else who knows your habits so when you lose things or do something stupid, they can come to your rescue in the most efficient way possible. You do it for them too.”
Communication
One Redditor also added, “I can’t even express how amazing it is that my husband can understand my nonsense talk. I forget words for things all the time and now he just understands what I’m trying to say. It’s amazing.”
Another Redditor said, “Having someone that can check you on your ****, in a respectful and loving way. Do I smell weird? Is my hair f*cked up? Did I say “uh” too many times when we role-played for a job interview? My husband is always honest with me, and I need that grounding in my life. It’s amazing.”
Investigations
A Redditor had this to say, “Having someone else investigate the strange noise.”
Another added, “I’m easily spooked and my husband is too, but won’t admit it. So it’s really easy to convince him to check out the spooky stuff because he wants to seem brave for me.”
Sick Time
A popular comment was, “When you both get sick at the same time and you get to watch several days worth of horrible movies together while sharing one tub of vap-o-rub.”
Another user replied, “Last year my wife and I got sick and built a fort with a makeshift bed on the floor and binged watched The Office in its entirety (my first time seeing it). That was a fun snuggly weekend.”
Support
One Redditor said, “For me, I suffer from anxiety and depression. I don’t even need to say anything to my wife. She just knows if I’m not feeling “good” and will sit and cuddle with me which 99.9% of the time changes my mood.”
Another Redditor added, “Having someone who believes in you when you’re not sure you believe in yourself. I can’t even tell you how much more confident and successful I am simply because my wife says things like: “You are amazing. You can do anything.”
Love
One person wrote, “We make a huge deal out of unconditional love, but it’s unconditional LIKE that really tickles the soul.”
A second person replied, “The other day, I asked my dude if he had a crush on me when we first met, and he said “Yes, I still have a crush on you.” Gave me butterflies. Sometimes that’s better to hear than “I love you.”
Togetherness
A Redditor added, “Not having to date around anymore!”
A second Redditor replied, “Seeing people on 1st/2nd dates, stressing over what text messages really mean, figuring out how much of yourself to let out, that whole Tinder thing, it just makes me so tired just thinking about it all. I’ve told my wife (25 years) that she has no worries about me ever leaving her because I couldn’t stand the thought of doing that all again.”
Teamwork
A most-liked comment was, “The team approach to every situation. “You get the table, I’ll place the order,” or “You get the seats, I’ll get the popcorn and sodas,” or “You put kid 1 to bed, and I’ll take kid 2”. Plus, always getting to order the best 2 things on the menu and sharing.”
Another comment read, “Yes, this. Just 20 minutes ago, the hubs and I discussed tag teaming it today with 2 kids that need to go 2 different directions. While we could technically go as a family to everything, it would take longer. If we tag team it, one can go with one kid, the other with the other, then meet back at home for a nap before we all go to a bonfire/chili cook-off tonight.”
Warmth
Finally, a Redditor added, “I get very cold at night, and my husband is a human furnace. So now I don’t need 2 blankets, socks, and long sleeves.”Redditors came in strong with the most underrated parts of marriage.
