Substance Abuse/Addiction
To begin, a user shared, “Dude, I know won a 3 million dollar settlement from being hit by a car. Spent it all on dr*** and was gone within 3 years. Under 30 years old.”

Another user added, “The smartest guy I’d ever met to that time, my brother-in-law. Got his first taste of dr***, never finished, and ended up living in a shed in his parents’ carport.”
Financial Fraud
A comment was, “Crime, specifically felonies. My lawyer took out a loan forging my signature. He’s doing 15 years in federal prison. I would have given him the $5000. His kid was very sick, and I would have gladly helped him out.”
Criminal Behavior/Legal Troubles
Many comments spoke of criminal acts like robbery and they ended up doing hard time in jail and ruining their lives.
Toxic Relationships
A user said, “Friend of mine had a girlfriend that was notorious for tieing men to herself by ‘accidentally’ getting pregnant when things weren’t going well in the relationship. At that point, she already had three kids from different guys while in her early/mid-twenties. Said friend was lucky enough that things ended before she could do that again. However, his best friend caught feelings for her, too, and had an on/off relationship for a couple of months. To no one’s surprise, she got preggo, and he now has to pay for a child he hasn’t seen once.”
Reckless Behavior/Impulsivity
One user shared, “A close friend of my best friend grabbed his eight-year-old son’s new skateboard and took off down a hill in Georgia. Hit a rock, landed on his head, and had permanent brain damage. He lived years before he mercifully died. Had to be restrained the whole time because the damage made him erratic and violent. Wear a helmet!”
Career/Education Neglect
A person said, “Howard Dean yelping at that campaign event, went from possible candidate to laughing stock in one clip.”
Another person added, “Lance Armstrong admitting to doping and lying on NATIONAL TV.”
Gambling/Risk-Taking
One user said, “Watched a guy gamble $30k away in a night and then cried about losing his life savings, and security had to get involved and escort him out because he started to get angry at the dealers because all they could offer him was free night stays at the hotel for playing so much, but he wanted freeplay at the tables/slots, and they refused.”
Neglecting Personal Health
One comment was, “Patients with actual curable ( early stage ) cancer decide to get treated with a “more natural approach” SPOILER ALERTS: they always come back with metastatic disease.”
Another comment said, “Cancer started out a tiny little speck. Went the ‘holistic’ route. Dead eleven months later. Sought medical care far, far too late. Wonderful human too. Literally one of the nicest people that has ever walked the earth. Really heartbreaking.”
Poor Decision-Making
One person said, “Bar fight. Heard a loud commotion for about 30 seconds. Some guy thought this guy was hitting on his date. Suckered punched him. The other guy fell down and clipped the bar. The bar had a brass footrest at the base. Snapped the guy’s neck so loud you could hear it across the room.”
Lack of Responsibility/Accountability
Someone else added, “Had an employee on her first day take a 2hr lunch to go to get her makeup done in the middle of the day. She came back and was escorted out looking amazing.”
Engaging in Illegal Activities
One comment said, “Arrive at work on their first day as a temp at around 10 am, caught stealing the bosses wallet at 12:30, taken away by Police at 1 pm.”
Negative Influences
A user shared, “Taking up a gigantic amount of consumer loan for her boyfriend, to finance his lifestyle. The boyfriend left her in deep debt that she was unable to pay alone. Terrible interest rates made it grow multiple times its original amount. She is still paying this a decade later, often working like 160%.”
Self-Destructive Behaviors
One story was, “My sister-in-law went off her bipolar meds at 42 to try to have a baby. That was 3 months ago, and now she’s in jail awaiting sentencing for threatening a police officer, among many other things. She lost her job, her house, and most of her friends. Just turned feral and angry.”
Negative Life Patterns
Finally, someone shared, “Old high school classmate of mine got a girl pregnant during our last year of school. Then he proceeded soon after to get another girl pregnant. And what did he do again recently? You guessed right! He got a third one pregnant! Now he is paying triple child support to three different girls. And he has barely any money. He comes from a poor family. Last time I heard of him, he started selling dr**s to get the cash in and pay for the kid’s money.”
